Monday Marks Day 11 In Edwards Trial

Week three of the John Edwards Trial begins with a lawyer in the witness box.

Jeff Tiberii: Alex Forger testified on Friday about the 725 thousand dollars his client Bunny Mellon provided to an Edwards aide. Forger said Mellon gave the money as a gift and it was intended to benefit Edwards. The 101-year-old donor did not know it was to hide Edwards' mistress. Forger also said that Edwards former lawyer Wade Smith acknowledged in 2008 that Edwards was aware of the payments. Edwards has denied knowing about the payments. Forger will be followed on the stand by other Mellon associates. Rielle Hunter, the woman with whom Edwards had an affair is due to testify later this week. The prosecution has indicated it could rest its case as early as Thursday.

Jeff Tiberii is the co-host of WUNC's "Due South." Jeff joined WUNC in 2011. During his 20 years in public radio, he was Morning Edition Host at WFDD and WUNC’s Greensboro Bureau Chief and later, the Capitol Bureau Chief. Jeff has covered state and federal politics, produced the radio documentary “Right Turn,” launched a podcast, and was named North Carolina Radio Reporter of the Year four times.
