NC DOT Considers How To Pay For I-95 Improvements

The state Department of Transportation is continuing to seek input on the best way to pay for improvements to the I-95 corridor. NC DOT officials released a study last week saying that among several scenarios, mitigated tolls would provide the best economic benefit.

Out-of-state residents and businesses would pay more under a mitigated toll system. It would raise more than five billion dollars per year through 2050 to upgrade I-95. Improvements include road widening, re-paving and bridge replacements.

But there’s a new greenhouse at Syngenta in Research Triangle Park that is said to be the only one of its kind in the world. Dignitaries and leaders in biotechnology and agriculture were on-hand Friday for a tour of this state-of-the-art greenhouse and to celebrate the grand opening of Syngenta’s Advanced Crop Lab.

Raleigh Development Flourishes Thanks To Resilient Economy

Raleigh city officials have plans for several new residential developments in the middle of the capital city. They say it's part of their master plan to entice not only new residents but new business downtown.

It is also an indication that Raleigh is doing well economically. City Planning Director Mitchell Silver says residences that are on the drawing board or under construction are geared toward not just urban professionals, but families.

Strong Demand For Quintiles Its First Day On NYSE

There seems to be strong investor demand on the New York Stock Exchange for North Carolina-based Quintiles.

Trading began today for the drug-testing company at $40 a share, and by mid-day – shares were up to almost $44. The price closed at $42.

Phil Bridges, a spokesman for Quintiles, says this is an iconic moment in the company's history.

Trading on the New York Stock Exchange begins Thursday for North Carolina-based Quintiles.

The company announced late Wednesday that it is selling about 23.7 million shares of its common stock to the public at $40 a share. That would raise nearly $950 million in this initial public offering for the bio-pharmaceutical services company.

Duke Energy Assesses 1700-Acre Chatham Co. Tract For Business Potential

A large parcel of undeveloped land near Siler City has been chosen by Duke Energy to take part in the utility's Site Readiness Program. The utility selected a total of 17 sites in the Carolinas, ten of which are in North Carolina. Duke Energy's Jeff Brooks says the 1700-acre Chatham County tract will be assessed for its potential to lure large industry and manufacturing to the area and calls it a "win-win" for everyone.

Greensboro Looks For A Million Dollar Idea

Leaders in Greensboro are accepting submissions for a federal grant that will award one million dollars for an innovative plan. The winning idea is supposed to help the city’s economy by designing a way to improve long-term job prospects. Organizers admit they’re being purposely vague to see what kind of submissions they get to develop the city. A panel of about 20 people that will ultimately chose the winning entry, met for the first time on Wednesday.

Ask any long-time Chapel Hill resident to name a few of the town’s business icons, and Sutton’s Drug Store is likely to come up. Founded in 1923, the old fashioned pharmacy has been open for 90 years and celebrates that fact today with a special deal for its customers: from 11:00 to 4:30, hot dogs, Cokes and French fries will be only a nickel, reflecting the store’s 1923 prices. They’re expecting several hundreds of customers.
