About 1,000 undergraduates and 600 graduate students received degrees at Wake Forest University's commencement exercises today. The school's Class of 2013 includes 11 recipients of the prestigious Fulbright Scholarship. Those students will be taking on post-graduate work ranging from researching regenerative medicine in Sweden to teaching Vietnamese children.

PBS journalist Gwen Ifill delivered the commencement address and urged the graduates to keep several promises.

NC DOT Considers How To Pay For I-95 Improvements

The state Department of Transportation is continuing to seek input on the best way to pay for improvements to the I-95 corridor. NC DOT officials released a study last week saying that among several scenarios, mitigated tolls would provide the best economic benefit.

Out-of-state residents and businesses would pay more under a mitigated toll system. It would raise more than five billion dollars per year through 2050 to upgrade I-95. Improvements include road widening, re-paving and bridge replacements.

Artists, Events Announced For Raleigh's 'Wide Open Bluegrass' Festival

Organizers of the World of Bluegrass are gearing up for their inaugural year in North Carolina's capital. They've announced many of the acts and events that will highlight the festival later this year.

Grammy-winner Alison Krauss will join Steve Martin and North Carolina's own Steep Canyon Rangers as featured performers. North Carolina bands like the Grass Cats and Lorraine Jordan and Carolina Road will also take center stage at several venues at what's being called the "Wide Open Bluegrass Festival".

But it's not just about the music.

Raleigh Development Flourishes Thanks To Resilient Economy

Raleigh city officials have plans for several new residential developments in the middle of the capital city. They say it's part of their master plan to entice not only new residents but new business downtown.

It is also an indication that Raleigh is doing well economically. City Planning Director Mitchell Silver says residences that are on the drawing board or under construction are geared toward not just urban professionals, but families.

Gullah Geechee Corridor Plan Gets Federal Blessing

Preservationists are welcoming federal approval of a management plan to preserve areas steeped in Gullah Geechee culture. The U.S. Department of the Interior says the effort to promote cities and towns in the Carolinas, Georgia and Florida is ready to be put into action.

Eight Inmates File Lawsuit Over Alleged Abuse At Central Prison

Advocates have filed a federal lawsuit on behalf of some state prison inmates. The eight inmates at Central Prison in Raleigh wrote letters to attorneys with the state's Prisoner Legal Services agency saying officers beat them while they were restrained.

Campbell University To Offer Homeland Security Degree

Campbell University students will become the first in North Carolina to take courses toward a major in Homeland Security. About 50 students are already on the path to the four-year undergraduate degree. The courses will familiarize them with domestic and international terrorist groups and delve into the background of countries where terror organizations have historically formed.

A controversial House bill that would cut off commercial catching of certain types of fish was the subject of public debate Monday. Lawmakers would reclassify red drum, speckled trout and striped bass as game fish - only caught by recreational fishermen - if House Bill 983 becomes law.

Gov. Pat McCrory gave a national audience a glimpse into reforms he wants to implement in North Carolina. He delivered this past weekend's GOP response to President Obama's weekly address.

McCrory criticized what he called Washington's "weak leadership" and urged national lawmakers to give more flexibility and accountability to states. He says he needs that kind of freedom to implement a different approach to Medicaid reform.
