The number of people sickened by salmonella traced to a Fayetteville area hotel has risen to at least 82. Officials say the outbreak happened earlier this month at the Holiday Inn Bordeaux. Buck Wilson is the public health director for Cumberland County. He says finding the precise cause is challenging.

Bodie Island Lighthouse Opens To Public For The First Time

For the first time ever, the Bodie Island Lighthouse will be open for public tours. The structure was built in 1872 and has been closed for a $5 million renovation for the past four years. Years of exposure to harsh weather had brought on structural and safety problems. Restoration work included repairs to the spiral stairs, brickwork and the lens that still serves as a navigational guide for ships.

Fewer People Are Applying To Law School

Many law schools across the country have experienced a drop in applications over the past two years. Officials say rising tuition and a shaky job market are contributing to the decline.

“Applications this year, reflecting kind of a national trend are down to about 1,510 from 2,300 last year, that's about a 35 percent drop,” says Jack Boger, dean of the UNC School of Law. “A lot of law schools experienced that kind of drop a year ago; we didn't at that point, but the national trend has caught up with us.”

Flood insurance rates are set to go up for people who own property along the North Carolina coast. Congress approved the rate increase last year after the National Flood Insurance Program had to borrow money to pay damage claims in the wake of Hurricane Katrina and Super-storm Sandy.

Union Sailors Caught In Famous NC Shipwreck Laid To Rest 150 Years Later

The remains of two Union sailors who went down with the ironclad USS Monitor off the North Carolina coast will be honored Friday at Arlington National Cemetery.

The Civil War ship sank 150 years ago. The remains were found in 2002. Lauren Heesemann is the research coordinator for NOAA's Monitor National Marine Sanctuary.

Wildlife Officials Spar With Hyde County Over Refuge Expansion

A proposed expansion of the Pocosin Lakes National Wildlife Refuge is running into opposition with some local leaders.

Refuge leaders say the expansion is necessary to preserve the ecosystem that supports a wide range of wildlife, including migrating birds, black bears and red wolves.

"New Lake is a naturally occurring lake out there, but we currently only have about 80 percent of it within the refuge boundary," says refuge manager Howard Phillips.
