Here are photos from Beaufort's America's Sail Tall Ships event - running through July 4, 2006. WUNC will have periodic reports from this event. Melinda Penkava is covering this event for WUNC Radio.
She writes:
"The AmericasSail happens every four years. It's a gathering of "tall ships" vintage or replica boats. Given the name, the boats go to one port in South America, one in Central America and one in North America. Beaufort is the North American port of call this year and was chosen because a local man, Horatio Sinbad (he changed his name to that years ago) won a sailboat race at the last AmericasSail in 2002. He had a crew of four teenagers and says he was shocked that they'd won. Two years ago he says he was contacted that by winning the race he had the right to name the North American port for the 2006 AmericasSail. He says it took about thirty seconds for him to say yes to putting the event in Beaufort. His face and figure are the ones you see in the ads. A drawing of his boat, the Meka II adorns many cans of Pepsi, the corporate sponsor of the event. There are 13 boats here. Some of the boats are docked along the boardwalk in Beaufort. Most of them are docked at the brand new waterfront at Gallants Channel, where the Maritime Museum plans to put its Olde Beaufort Seaport maritime village within the next ten years. The two biggest boats, including the Brazilian Navy's "Cisne Branco" will be at the State Port at Morehead City which has the facilities necessary for the 249 foot long ship. Given Sinbad's involvement in getting the event here, the Beaufort Historic Grounds will have a Pirate Encampment through the weekend. We will be covering the event with news reports and a feature on Monday morning with stories of some of the boats, the people here and yes, the pirate camp."
